The Four Paths · Lesson 2 of 29

The Classification of Yoga

What yoga is.

Classification of Yoga

All religions speak of the same Ultimate Reality. Through Yoga, one can dive deep into one’s own religion, whatever it may be, to find answers about life, the world around you and your connection with God. It must be clear at this point, that though Yoga has been mentioned previously, both in the context of religion and philosophy, it is neither.

You can belong to any religion and yet be an adherent of Yoga. Therefore, if you study Yoga, you will understand your own religion and faith more profoundly; you will be able to unravel the mystic significance of your own scriptures. It is for this reason that this ancient system has been referred to as the “Mother” (inspiration) of all religions of the world.

Similarly, Yoga is not a philosophy in an academic sense. It is not based upon speculations of human reasoning. It is founded on the revelations of Sages and Saints. Yoga points to the Ultimate Reality experienced by all illumined Sages of all faiths and presents spiritual disciplines to realize that ultimate goal. In practice, Yoga is a blend of universal religion and intuitional philosophy.
