The Fire on the Tail: Hanuman and the Fire of Wisdom
In the morning satsanga of October 18, 2026, Swami Jyotirmayananda read the fire set to Hanuman's tail as inquiry blessed by devotion: the fire of wisdom that reaches every corner of ignorance and egoism, and turns helplessness into an opening for grace.

The satsanga opened in celebration of Sri Maha Lakshmi, with Swamiji reciting a stotra to the Divine Mother. He rendered its meaning line by line: she is the very embodiment of all forms of auspiciousness, the consort of Lord Shiva, the one who bestows success in all the purusharthas, the aims of human life. She is the protector of all, the one in whom we take refuge, the embodiment of grace. Three forms of the Divine Mother are celebrated together, he said, "Because all three are already one."
The Terror That Seems Indestructible
Swamiji then returned to the Ramayana and to the role of Hanuman. The great power of ignorance, he explained, is a type of terror that seems indestructible. Before it, "Everyone becomes helpless." The terror seems to come from every side: you face it on one side, and it rises on another.
Yet Swamiji did not treat that helplessness as defeat. "It is actually opportunity." It is the opportunity for doing one's prayer, for invoking grace, "And to see the amazing miracle." The terror takes many forms, and Hanuman too takes many forms. Once it is in Hanuman's grip, the terror cannot escape.
The Nearest Son of Ignorance
How does ignorance show itself? Ignorance, Swamiji taught, expresses itself through egoism. Egoism is the nearest son of ignorance, its most direct expression in a human life.
This is where Hanuman's work becomes clear. He is to give a big blow to Ravana and all the demons, and to bring about a complete change in the entire Lanka. Lanka seems indestructible and invulnerable. Yet Hanuman is going to set the entire Lanka on fire.
Swamiji drew attention to how this happens. At one point Hanuman apparently acts as if he has been overpowered. "But that is his plan." His purpose is to get into Lanka, to confront Ravana, and then to shake the entire Lanka. What looks like Hanuman's capture is the very means of his entry.
When Hanuman Enters, Destiny Changes
As Hanuman enters, Swamiji said, even the deities who lead people through karmic destiny are affected. These are the same gods that people worship. But when one is not mature, one worships them for sakamya ends, for egoistic fulfillment. "You create karmic destiny." In that kind of worship the individual builds the very circumstances he later has to face.
"You are the architect of your destiny." What type of destiny one faces "depends upon your karma," and when one changes one's karma, the destiny changes as well. So destiny always remains under the law of karma.
But when Hanuman enters, the deities adore Hanuman and become very happy, and all one's worship becomes really successful. There is also a deeper destiny than the karmic one. Every soul has a destiny: "To realize I am Brahman." When Hanuman enters, all those shaky destinies change. One is still the architect of one's destiny, but now in a divine way, through the power of satsanga and the power of Hanuman.
The Fire on the Tail
Turning to the meaning of this allegorical story, Swamiji asked what one should do when attacked by so many horrible forces. The answer is inquiry, directed by Hanuman, and that inquiry goes with jnana agni, "The fire of wisdom."
No matter how long things have been kept hidden by the demoniac forces, they cannot remain hidden from that inquiry. In the story, those forces are led to set fire to Hanuman's tail, and in doing so they prepare their own undoing. This is the inquiring mind under the power of Hanuman Shakti, joined with bhakti of Rama. With bhakti of Rama, inquiry goes into every corner.
The Skillful Physician
Swamiji gave a simple example. If you are sick, you are not fulfilled by taking a medicine that only stops your symptoms. You want to know the cause, and you go to a skillful physician "To remove the cause."
Inquiry works the same way. The inquiring movement brings about the process of cure for "The disease of the world," the source of all one's troubles, rather than a treatment of symptoms alone. Inquiry blessed by the grace of Rama goes to the root. "So you will not make mistake in your inquiry."
Swamiji closed by promising to continue this great story, and with a prayer for a shower of the grace of God over all, with the blessings of Shakti.
