The Boon That Undid the Demons: Madhu, Kaitabha and the Sublimated Intellect

In the morning satsanga of November 6, 2026, Swami Jyotirmayananda told the Puranic story of Madhu and Kaitabha and taught how obstructive forces, once sublimated, become the very ground of spiritual progress.

After an invocation to Lord Ganesha and the verse to Lord Rama of the Raghu dynasty, whose complexion is like a blue lotus, tender and delightful, with Sita at His left side and bow and arrow in His hands, the satsanga sang the Divine Name. Swamiji then read a poem, "The Festivity of Light."

Night spreads her veil of darkness across the sky. Dark clouds move over the mountains, frightening figures appear, the wolves howl, and ghosts and goblins dance. But the Goddess of Light sends the smiling rays of the shining sun, and the darkness dwindles. The summits of the mountains glisten, green trees dance in the breeze, flowers bloom, birds sing, swans soar in the sky, and silvery streams flow on, singing the song of spring. Where the ghosts had danced before, there appears the festivity of light. After prayers to Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Durga, Goddess Saraswati and Lord Shiva, the reading of the Ramayana continued.

When Divine Values Are Obstructed

Swamiji began by recalling what had been explained before. Atikaya is extreme identity with the body, and with it come the forces of darkness and ignorance. In that obstructive movement, all one's divine values become obstructed. The divine value is always there: one can bring graciousness into the personality, change the mental attitude, and extend grace to the whole world. But while that movement obstructs, one cannot be gracious.

Human values, he explained, allow a person to be progressive. All the progress of science has been created by human beings, and that progress has no end. Just a few years back, things were very different; now one can contact anyone with a fingertip. Ten years ago people could not imagine it, and in a few more years still more miraculous change will occur.

The obstructive force, however, holds back sadhana. It affects the mind, the intellect and karma, and all three are enveloped. When it is sublimated, all three become free. Through action one brings tremendous good to the world; that is karma yoga. Feeling becomes devotional feeling, and the more one has bhakti bhavana, the more eloquence one has. "Enemies become friends." The intellect that had been obstructed becomes enlightened intellect, intuitive intellect. Purification begins, and with it an amazing spiritual progress that will not end.

The Sons of Ravana, One by One

There are a few more sons of Ravana, Swamiji said, and all of them are obstructive movements. In the coming episodes we see how, one by one, they are sublimated. The greatest heroic act is sublimating Atikaya, extreme identity. Kumbhakarna was a great obstruction, and he was sublimated; Atikaya is even stronger than Kumbhakarna.

Madhu and Kaitabha

To show what such sublimation means, Swamiji told the Puranic story of Madhu and Kaitabha. They became demoniac and began to attack Vishnu Himself, and Vishnu fought with them. Showing their heroic strength, they declared themselves pleased with Vishnu's heroism and offered Him any boon He might ask.

Vishnu answered: may you both "be killed by me on my thigh." Suddenly they realized that by their own stupidity they had brought about their own end. They tried to escape by agreeing that He could kill them only on His thigh, because to their minds Vishnu's thigh was limited. But the moment the words were said, Vishnu extended His thigh up, down, everywhere.

The whole earth, Swamiji explained, is called Medini, for it came from fat. From Kaitabha came thorny forests and all that creates bitterness and terror. "It's a blend of these two." That is the world of process in which every person lives.

The Intellect That Searches for Enemies

If one does not attain enlightenment, Swamiji taught, one remains trapped, and the intellect is caught by durbuddhi, perverted understanding. Instead of working to remove animosity and demonic qualities, the intellect creates more. It keeps asking, "Where is my enemy?" "Your intellect uses all its skills" to find the home of the enemy and the relatives of the enemy, until there are enemies everywhere and the mind is constantly busy.

For enlightenment, Madhu and Kaitabha both are to be sublimated. When they are, the earth now becomes the basis for spiritual progress, and the terrible part of creation, Kaitabha, becomes a source of great adventure and great progress. Now, he said, we can watch how all of this works out in the story.

Why We Come to Satsanga

That is why one comes to satsanga. Human values are obstructed and divine values are obstructed, and with the help of Guru Kripa and satsanga the obstructive forces become sublimated. "You are never perfect." But perfection comes through progressing.

Swamiji also spoke of intoxication. When one takes an alcoholic drink, the mind becomes affected; drunk people do not know who they are. That demoniac force intoxicates. A drunk person falls into a pit and still believes himself great. It is a downfall movement.

Lakshmana, Hanuman and the Strength of Faith

Lakshmana, Swamiji explained, is raja yoga: concentration and meditation. Its success becomes secure with the aid of the venerable Hanuman, a strong type of faith. Soon we will see how Lakshmana sublimates Atikaya, and how the gods, Indra and others, come with special weapons. When Hanuman is behind it, sadhana is progressive and everything one does becomes success. Without that strength, every sadhana brings more and more frustration, and one is left asking how many years one has been at it.

The satsanga closed with a prayer for a shower of grace, and for the welfare and peace of all.
