The Nature of the Disease

2026-01-14

Why do we repeat the same mistakes, lifetime after lifetime? According to Yoga Vasistha, this repetition is the primary symptom of Bhava-vyādhi, the disease of the world process. The root cause is Avidyā (ignorance), and the cure lies not in external changes, but in a profound shift of internal vision.

In this lecture on Sthiti Prakaraṇa, Section 42, we explore how the infinite Brahman assumes the role of the limited soul, and how we can reverse this process to find lasting peace.

The venerable Sage Vasistha explains that the soul, overpowered by the mind, is “scorched in the furnace of grief.” We are often like a mighty elephant sinking in a marsh, trapped by our own misunderstandings and patterns.

The symptom is clear and painfully familiar: “Things you have experienced before, you experience again, because you didn’t learn lessons from them.” This cycle of repetition is the hallmark of Avidyā.

The Cure: Jñāna Lakṣaṇas (Signs of Wisdom)

To truly heal this condition and break free from repetitive cycles, one must cultivate specific virtues. These are beautifully described in the Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 13) and further elaborated upon in the Yoga Vasistha. They are the essential medicines for the soul:

The Evolution of Illusion

How does the Infinite, boundless Brahman come to experience itself as the finite, limited individual soul? The lecture outlines this fascinating descent into illusion:

  1. Jīva (Soul): The initial reflection of pure Consciousness, still largely unconditioned.
  2. Ahaṃkāra (Ego): The subtle emergence of the false identification with “I” and “Mine,” creating a sense of separate selfhood.
  3. Buddhi (Intellect): Reasoning and decision-making that now operate based on the ego’s limitations and biases.
  4. Manas (Mind): The faculty responsible for processing thoughts, desires, and sensory inputs, all colored by the preceding stages.

This entire intricate structure is built upon Citta (mind-stuff), the substratum of all mental activity. Just as rivers flow into the vast ocean, all desires, impressions, and experiences flow into the Citta. The ultimate goal of Yoga is to enlighten this Citta, thereby dissolving the illusion of separation and realizing our true, infinite nature.
