The River Enters the Sea: Vibhishana Leaves Lanka for the Refuge of Rama
In the morning satsanga of October 21, 2026, Swami Jyotirmayananda taught that when Vibhishana leaves Lanka for the refuge of Rama, the gateway opens to divine treasure, and read his four counselors as the faculties that guide a seeker toward God.

The satsanga opened with invocations to Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Durga and the Guru, and with the hymn to Goddess Saraswati. Then came the meditation on Lord Rama, the beloved of the Raghu dynasty, whose complexion is like a blue lotus, very tender and delightful, with Sita seated at his left side and a powerful bow and arrow in his hands. After the Hare Rama mantra, Swamiji read a short poem on the glory of God. With a glimpse of a radiant face, the clouds of gloom lift and the veil of ignorance is dispelled. There is no effort in forgiving and no trouble in enduring. As there is no effort for the river to enter the sea, there is no struggle for the soul to gain eternity. By the grace of God the Supreme Abode is revealed, the face of truth is unveiled, and supreme peace is attained.
Then Swamiji continued the episode in the Ramayana.
Prosperity in the Service of Ignorance
When ignorance dominates the mind, Swamiji taught, the three gunas follow it like servants of ignorance. That is the state in which one attains worldly prosperity and all worldly attainments. Every project meets with success, success, success. But all that success serves only to swell the ego.
The scene changes when the soul moves away from Ravana and goes under the refuge of Rama. What once served the ego now turns to Rama and becomes a support for his victory over Ravana.
Lanka Laid Open
Lanka, Swamiji explained, was already made vulnerable by Hanuman. Now Vibhishana moves away from it. Had he not moved, the demons would not have been destroyed. By his standing away, the destruction of Lanka has become completely open.
The Four Counselors
Vibhishana comes to Rama along with four of his ministers, his counselors, and Swamiji read each of them as a faculty within the seeker.
The first is sattvic buddhi, the purified intellect. Where it is present, the movement of inquiry is no longer restricted.
The second, he said, gives the power of digestion. "It gives digestive power." With it, all the adversity that comes to you, you eat up like chutney.
The third is Sampati, which means divine wealth. In that movement, all the divine virtues begin to develop.
The last gives a kind of understanding that does not allow you to stay where you are, but takes you upward.
All four act as secret spies, Swamiji said, "watching every step" of Ravana, and they guide the seeker in following Rama. That is the subtle meaning behind them: the purified intellect at work.
Leaving Lanka, Taking Refuge
If you do not leave Lanka and take refuge in Rama, Swamiji taught, you remain in bondage, drawn again and again by ignorance and its attendants. What helps is satsanga and righteous conduct. The more you become involved in satsanga and sadachara, the more that bondage is removed.
Behind this is the grace of Goddess Saraswati. Her grace enables you to turn to Rama and move away from bondage. Swamiji said this is illustrated by Lakshmana, who remained always entirely awake.
The Gateway to Divine Treasure
Swamiji then spoke of the role of sumati and kumati, right understanding and wrong understanding. When right understanding has developed, it opens the gateway to divine treasure: grace, miraculous power, real prosperity. Real prosperity is turning toward God and moving away from what is wrong.
Being drawn to mundane attainments, to the sakamya mind that runs after desires, makes life a house of misery. Your prosperity makes you miserable, and "your adversity makes you miserable." But the one who has turned to God is truly prosperous and possesses the supreme treasure, and that wealth is made of all the divine qualities. "Bhakti is the greatest quality."
The Power of Rama's Word
"The entire Ramayana is like that." Swamiji recited the Sanskrit verse of Rama's promise and explained it: whoever turns to Rama with saranagati, Rama makes that one abhayam, fearless, from all. That is the power of Rama's word. So cultivate saranagati more and more. For Vibhishana, the entire future now opened up with a very positive view.
The satsanga closed with a prayer that divine grace shower on all, invoking the grace of Goddess Durga, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati, and with the prayer for the happiness and well-being of all.
