The Armor of Fearlessness: Vibhishana and the Power of Saranagati

In the morning satsanga of October 22, 2026, Swami Jyotirmayananda taught that the one who takes refuge in God becomes abhayam, fearless, and that Rama's victory over the demons is guided by Vibhishana, the purified intellect assisted by its four great qualities.

The satsanga opened with invocations to Lord Ganesha, Goddess Durga and the Guru, and with the meditation on Lord Rama, the Lord of the Raghu dynasty, whose complexion is like a blue lotus, very tender and delightful. Then came the prayer to Goddess Saraswati: O Mother, resplendent at the dawn, decked with snowy garments, glory to the Goddess of speech and intelligence. Bestow on me eloquence and wisdom that dispel the darkness of delusion. Grant me spiritual strength to face the adversities of life with insight and inspiration. May all be happy, free of all miseries, and may all be blessed with supreme victory.

Then Swamiji turned to the theme of the morning: the power of saranagati, surrender to God.

Rama's Promise

Swamiji recited in Sanskrit the promise of Rama and explained it. Anyone who comes, no matter how inimical he had been, whenever he comes saying that he has taken refuge in Rama, Rama says: I will make him fearless from all.

The one who receives that promise, Swamiji taught, becomes abhayam, fearless, and is completely armored. No power and no force can harm him.

The Fear Behind Prosperity

In every sakamya movement, every movement driven by desire, a person may gain a great deal. No matter how prosperous you are, Swamiji said, "the fear is always there." There is the fear of losing what has been gained, and the fear of mortality. You have attained all that, Swamiji asked, but for how long?

Once you have taken refuge in God, fear is not going to stop you from your progress. You will not entertain fear. You will entertain the power of bhakti. Before the power of bhakti, the forces of terror "have no strength."

So long as one is subject to fear, real spiritual progress cannot move freely. But once the movement of saranagati begins and one becomes abhayam, one can go on progressing.

The Screen Behind the Show

Swamiji then returned to Vibhishana in the presence of Rama, who became completely absorbed in ecstasy.

From that moment he drew a subtle teaching. All the multiplicity that you experience, and all the world of time and space, he said, is created as the eyes open and close. So too the vrittis, the movements of the mind, open and close. They create pratyayas, projections, and it is these pratyayas that reveal the whole story of the cinema show. When all pratyaya moves away, what remains is the screen, the reality behind every vritti. That is the movement from duality to non-duality, and that is Rama's vision.

Vibhishana could perceive that vision, Swamiji explained, because his was a sattvic movement, assisted by the four counselors he had described before.

The Intellect That Sees Every Detail

The same holds for every seeker. "Once you are moving towards Saranagati," Swamiji said, those qualities "will be always there assisting your Buddhi." Such a buddhi realizes every detail of the demoniac movement, and how to stop that movement by turning to Rama.

So Vibhishana, led by his ministers, tells Rama how things are happening in Lanka and what projects the demons are making. Guided by Vibhishana, Rama takes up the project of destroying all the demoniac forces. The battle against the demons, from beginning to end, is guided by Vibhishana. Without him, Swamiji said, Rama will not win.

The meaning is this: without that kind of buddhi, blessed by those four great qualities, you cannot see the victory of Rama.

The Right Physician

When a student asked what the four qualities are, Swamiji explained that those four assistants imply that your inner strength has so increased that your success becomes possible.

He gave a simple illustration. If you suffer from a disease and your buddhi is clear, you will go to the right kind of doctor. "If your Buddhi is not clear," then "you go to the wrong physician."

So the entire Ramayana, "Rama's movement to victory," is due to Vibhishana, and Vibhishana's strength comes through those four counselors.

The Temptation Sent to Sugriva

Before closing, Swamiji turned to the next movement of the story. A message is given to Sugriva: that he should be Ravana's friend and enjoy all the demoniac order, and asking why he should attend to Rama, who killed his brother.

Such demoniac temptations, Swamiji taught, become the great hurdle in any spiritual progress. The story will continue.

The satsanga closed with a prayer for the shower of the grace of God over all, with the blessings of Goddess Durga, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati.
